I have not tried the voice control yet.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: This is a fantastic product. My dad is is coming up on 93 years of age and has extremely limited vision. A couple of years ago I had purchased a different brand/model remote with limited functions and it ran it’s course and it was time for a replacement. I was intrigued when I came upon this remote, it looked better than others that I had seen. Key factors in purchasing this were; overall size of the remote; available in different colors, larger size and limited amount of buttons, a mute button, a return (to previous channel) button and simple set up. I confirmed this model would pair with my dad’s television brand and immediately ordered this in RED.Shipping was lightening quick, upon opening the package it was in perfect condition and exactly as described pictured. I took this over to my dad’s apartment for the true test. I always dread any type of set up related to gadgets and/or electrical components. When I showed the remote to my dad he was super impressed and excited to get it working. He liked the RED color which would make it stand out. I began the programming process and even someone like me was able to get it connected. My dad immediately began memorizing placement of the buttons, changing channels up and down, volume up and down, etc. The larger buttons really help him not only because he can’t see well but because he has large hands and fingers and has some loss of feeling. He would often hit an incorrect button on other remotes (which caused all types of chaos). This remote checked all the boxes for practicality and functionality. He was as excited as a 5 year old at Christmas! He raved about the mute and return buttons which is prior remote did not have so these buttons are a REALLY big deal for him. He’s been using his new remote now for 2-3 weeks and it’s working perfectly. Every time I see him or call him he raves about how wonderful this remote is. He also proudly shows it off to anyone that comes over. In all honesty this is truly a “quality of life product” and both I and my dad highly recommend it!

Customer Review: Perfect for seniors who have a hard time seeing small buttons. Excellent replacement for the Roku remotes. Visibility is good for hard to see buttons and finding the remote. Connected right away without any issues. I would recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a remote for an aging parent with vision issues. I ordered another one to use for a non-Roku tv to get antenna channels, and did not have to program the remote for the tv. It was easy peasy.

Backlit Big Button Universal Remote Control for Elderly - Learning Fea

It also includes a learning function, allowing you to copy functions from your original remote if needed. It’s compatible with most TV brands and some set-top boxes and DVD players. The large, easy-to-read buttons make it a solid choice for elderly users who watch TV in dimly lit environments.

  • ✓ Learning function to copy functions from original remote
  • ✓ Compatible with most TV brands and some DVD/set-top boxes
  • ✓ Simplified big-button layout
  • ✓ Affordable price for a backlit model

Why We Recommend It

We recommend this remote specifically for users who need backlighting but don’t want to pay a premium. The learning feature adds versatility if your TV brand isn’t in the preset codes. It’s a practical, middle-ground option that balances cost with useful features like backlighting.

Best For

Seniors who watch TV in dark rooms and need illuminated buttons. Also good for users with less common TV brands who might need the learning function. Not ideal if you want a remote that works entirely without the original remote present.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Backlit buttons are bright and useful at night
  • Learning function expands compatibility
  • Simple, large-button design
  • Good value for a backlit remote
Cons:
  • Learning function requires the original remote to be present
  • IR emitter placement can be tricky on some surfaces
  • Backlight may drain batteries faster
  • Setup can be slightly more complex than plug-and-play remotes

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Works good enough. The light on the remote is bright enough to navigate around the house in the dark temporarily if the power goes out. My original remote works fine but I needed a more simple remote with a larger power button since the power button is the only one used on the TV which is being used as a PC monitor. This worked with a TCL Google TV using the code on the TCL list. The second cost worked for mine.I wish the IR emitter on the front wasn’t sort of on the bottom edge and more in the middle. When placed on a fuzzy surface, like an arm rest, the IR light bulb pushes into the arm rest and gets blocked from signaling to the TV.Also, if you have a need to make the signal stronger from the remote, disable the backlight. It takes power from the IR signal.

Customer Review: Nice remote and the buttons are very easy to see. Works great.

Learning Big Button Universal TV Remote for Elderly - Requires Origina

  • ✓ Backlit buttons for dark rooms
  • ✓ Compatible with hundreds of TV brands
  • ✓ Two setup methods: code entry or learning
  • ✓ Customizable—program any button to any function

Why We Recommend It

We recommend this for users whose TV brand isn’t covered by preset remotes, or who want to replicate their exact original remote layout in a big-button format. The learning feature is powerful, though it does require having the original remote handy during setup.

Best For

People with less common TV brands or who want to keep specific functions from their original remote. Also good for tech-savvy seniors who don’t mind a slightly more involved setup for greater customization.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Learning function works with virtually any TV
  • Backlit buttons

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Worked without even setting it up. Comes with the code manual if you need it. Super simple and easy to use if you just need basic tv functions. Only downside is there’s no way to control tv settings with this type of remote.

Customer Review: These are high-quality performance, voice controlled remote controls. They are absolutely easy to use. They were already set up. I simply pointed them at the television and was able to use right out of the package. They were already compatible with my television perfect. Lightweight and simple to use.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: This remote has been perfect for my aging mother. The large buttons are easy to see and press, and the simple layout makes it very easy to use without confusion. Setup was quick, and it works seamlessly with her TV. It’s well-designed, reliable, and has made watching TV much easier and more enjoyable for her.

Customer Review: This remote is exactly what I needed. Most functions for my main TV are controlled by a HTPC (home theater PC) connected directly to it. Thus, I only needed power on and off for my 7 year old Sony TV. The remote works and learned the IR codes, but there is an important caveat to this. The instruction for step 4 in the guide states to press and hold the mute and green volume up + buttons together for 5 seconds until the red light blinks. THIS IS INCORRECT AND DIDN’T WORK. All you have to do for step 4 is press the mute and green volume up + buttons together, then immediately release both buttons. The remote will then blink and send codes for the different TV brands until you see the TV volume increase. Then press the mute button as stated in guide and it will work.

Customer Review: My mother has no problem using this one! It is not confusing for her at all! I no longer have to operate the remote for her! And it worked right away! Important note: if you have an older tv, it might not work. One of our tvs is older and not a smart tv and this remote didn’t work on it.

Customer Review: Great simple large button remote for a senior citizen who can’t navigate all the buttons on a smart tv remote and just wants basic channel navigation. The remote connected to the Vizio tv as soon as the batteries went in. 93 old parent couldn’t see the buttons and manage, even with arthritis. With the small button smart tv remote she used to keep switching the interface and locking herself out of her antenna channels (which is all she wants.) She handles this remote easily and has had no more issues managing her tv. Good for someone who needs something simple to move up and down on the channels.

Complete Buying Guide for Large Button TV Remote

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing a large button TV remote, the most critical factor is button size and layout. Look for buttons that are at least 0.5 inches across with clear, high-contrast labels. Backlighting is a major plus for low-light use. Compatibility is next—decide if you need a universal remote (works with many brands) or a brand-specific one (simpler setup). Programming method varies: some are preset, some auto-scan, some require learning with the original remote. Also consider device control—most only control TVs, but some can handle one additional device like a DVD player. Finally, think about ergonomics: weight, grip, and color (bright colors help with visibility). For other senior-friendly electronics, check out cordless phones for seniors with big buttons.

Budget Planning

Large button remotes typically range from $10 to $30. Basic universal remotes without backlighting fall at the lower end ($10-$15). Backlit models and brand-specific remotes with extra features like learning functions cost $15-$25. Premium models with extensive device control may reach $30. For most seniors, a $15-$20 model offers the best balance of features and reliability. When budgeting for senior-friendly products, also explore senior life insurance options to ensure comprehensive financial planning alongside daily living aids.

Final Thoughts

A good large button TV remote can dramatically improve a senior’s independence and quality of life. Our top pick, the GE BigEZ, offers the best overall package with backlit buttons and multi-brand presets. For pure simplicity, the Samsung or Vizio brand-specific remotes are unbeatable. The universal auto-scan models provide great flexibility. Prioritize ease of use over extra features—the goal is to reduce frustration, not add complexity. For more reviews on senior-focused products, check our guides on life insurance pros and cons and big button cordless phones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can large button remotes control streaming devices like Roku or Fire TV?

A: Most large button remotes are designed for basic TV functions only and are not compatible with streaming devices. However, some universal models like the GE BigEZ include preset buttons for Roku TVs, but they typically won’t control standalone streaming sticks. Always check the product description carefully for streaming compatibility.

Q: How do I program a large button universal remote?

A: Programming varies by model. Preset remotes (like GE BigEZ or Samsung-specific) require no programming—just insert batteries. Auto-scan remotes (like product #4) require holding Mute + Volume+ while pointing at the TV until it finds the code. Learning remotes require you to point the original remote at them to copy functions. Always follow the included manual, and note that some manuals have incorrect instructions (e.g., holding vs. releasing buttons).

Q: Are backlit buttons necessary for seniors?

A: Backlit buttons are highly recommended for seniors with vision challenges, especially if they watch TV in dark rooms. The illumination makes buttons visible without turning on lights. However, backlit models may cost slightly more and can drain batteries faster. If budget is tight, a high-contrast remote in a bright color (like red or blue) can be a good alternative.

Q: What’s the difference between a universal remote and a brand-specific one?

A: Universal remotes work with multiple TV brands but may require some setup (code entry or auto-scan). Brand-specific remotes are pre-configured for one brand (e.g., Samsung only) and work instantly with no setup. Universals offer flexibility for multi-brand households, while brand-specific remotes offer simpler, foolproof operation for single-brand setups.

Q: Can these remotes work with older TV models?

A: Most large button remotes work with a wide range of TV models, including older ones, as they use standard IR codes. However, compatibility is not guaranteed for every single model, especially very old or obscure brands. Always check the compatibility list in the product images or description before purchasing, and consider a learning remote if your brand isn’t listed.

Finding the right large button TV remote can make a world of difference for seniors and anyone seeking simplicity.
